The team that makes up A Fitting Connection have all been extremely busy and our designer Tarmi is no exception. So I really appreciate the time she has taken to answer a few questions so you can all get to know her a little better.
1. Why do you love doing what you do?
I love textile and fashion design as I can bring my art and design skills together to create an end product. I love that the end product is something that people can wear and that there are endless combinations of design elements that can be selected to bring a range or garment together.
2. How long have you been in the fashion industry?
I moved through different areas of design before settling in fashion. I have now been in the fashion industry for the past 12 years.
3. Have you always been a designer?
Yes I have always been a designer in one way or another. I love the challenge of design and ending up with a tangible product.
4. What are some of the labels/brands you have worked for/with?
I have designed work for both wholesalers and brands. The wholesalers would be Design Works, CK Clothing, Best Corporation and S.R. Fashions. Brands have included Sportsgirl, Obsession, Rainbird and many more.
5. What has been your most rewarding job?
Rather than job I would have to say project. My most rewarding project was working on my ‘Reclaim Thy Self’ exhibition where I was able to bring my love of nature, abandoned buildings, fashion, textiles and art together. I completely transformed the exhibition space into an immersive experience that invited the audience to experience and explore the beauty of decay, and natures ability to ‘RECLAIM’ the man made. The opening night runway dance performance allowed the audience to see the hidden textures of the wearable art that was part of the exhibition.
6. What excites you about the future in fashion?
I’m excited about the fashion industry finding that there are a lot more consumers now looking for ethical product. 3D printing has now become more accessible and I think we will see more of the top end designers and brands using this technology for customisation.
7. What would you like to see more of in the industry?
Quality over quantity

8. What are your favourite brands and why?
I think I would have to say designers rather than Brands. I love Victor and Rolf and Iris Van Herpen. The may have brands but their Haute Couture is pushing the boundaries of fashion and art.
9. Moving away from the fashion industry, what makes your heart sing?
Art! Art! Art! I was that kid who was always inventing, creating and exploring. This is what I always feel compelled to do. It’s always trying to come out in one form or another. It also feeds ideas and skills back into my design work.
Thank you so much for sharing your passion and a little insight to the person that you are Tarmi. It’s an honour to have you as a part of our team here at ‘A Fitting Connection’. Now let’s have a drink to the future of fashion and the independent businesses/brands that we love to support.
