Sat 5th & 12th February 2022
Children and adults alike are invited to join us as we turn textile waste into a beautiful community wall hanging.
Drop in and learn how to create flowers, leaves & butterflies from fabric waste. They will then be attached to a wall hanging where they will turn a bare tree into a blossoming one.
This project is embracing art, community and social activation. It has been created to bring awareness to the epic problem of textile waste. By involving the community in a fun and engaging way, it is our hope that we will start a chain reaction where we see a reduction consumption, and the amount of textiles ending up in landfill.
What Is Art?
The expression or application of human creative skill and imagination, typically in a visual form such as painting or sculpture, producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. Source
Community Art
Is artistic activity that is based in a community setting, characterised by interaction or dialogue with the community and often involving a professional artist collaborating with people who may not otherwise engage in the arts. Source
Social Art
Is the attempt to address or recognize a particular social issue using art and creativity. While a traditional artist uses their creative skills to express their take on the world, a social artist puts their skills to use to help promote and improve communities. Source
This community and social art piece will provoke thought and, we hope, action.
The base of the community artwork is a quilted all hanging, which represents the community coming together to foster and support each other. This base will be made by the ladies from the North Of The Yarra Quilters Guild (NYQG)
On this base, a tree that will be created from roped or twisted fabric, representing the life and strength of the community, and this will be created by our team.
You, the community, will make blooms, leaves & butterflies to go on the tree, representing the beauty that arises from community coming together.
Together we will create something special that will prompt us to all be purposeful in our actions, in a fun and creative way.
